New box with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

HarperCollins Publishers have recently released a box comprising the 2007 paperback editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Both editions are illustrated by the well-known artist Alan Lee.

Fastitocalon. A new journal on Fantasticism Ancient to Modern”

In the Old English poem The Whale one finds a sea creature named ‘Fastitocalon’, described as a large whale or sea turtle that can easily be mistaken for an island. References to this creature can also be found in the 2nd century text Physiologus, which is a description of animals and fantastic creatures.

Hither Shore, Vol. 6

Hither Shore is the annual scholarly journal of Deutsche Tolkien Gesellschaft (the German Tolkien Society). Volume 6, containing many of the talks given at the Tolkien Seminar in 2009, will be released within the very next days. The Topic of last year's seminar was “Violence, Conflict and War in Tolkien”.

New Edition of Howe's Map of Beleriand

HarperCollins Publishers have recently released a revised and expanded edition of their map of Beleriand: West of the Mountains, East of the Sea. The Map of Tolkien's Beleriand and the Lands to the North. The new edition features a map by the well-known Tolkien illustrator John Howe and a book by Brian Sibley. The map itself has been released for the first time in 1999. The book by Brian Sibley features an expanded and revised text compared to previously published editions.

The Legend of Sigurd and Gudr�n as Paperback

HarperCollins Publishers have recently released the world's first paperback edition of Tolkien's The Legend of Sigurd and Gudr�n. So far Tolkien's Edda-based work was available only as a hardback edition. The hardback was released in 2009.
